01 / THE CHARACTER OF THE BRAND

Leave room for what matters.

1995Soneva Fushi · the island story begins

In 1995, Soneva Fushi invited guests to take off their shoes and reconsider luxury. Barefoot Luxury evolved into Bare Luxury: fewer distractions, more nature, space and connection. It explains the open living spaces and unhurried island rhythm.

02 / LIVING WITH THE NAME

From a philosophy
to your own address.

Soneva has evolved its original Barefoot Luxury idea into Bare Luxury: remove what distracts so nature, space, joy and connection come forward, while taking responsibility for the environment. Its villas and residences privilege indoor-outdoor living, seclusion and freedom to set one’s own pace, supported by personalised island experiences.

Soneva had a distinct Villa Ownership programme documented in its official 2024 brochure. Many current villa pages describe resort stays. For a home purchase, the current terms of the individual offering require separate confirmation.

THE DETAILS OF LIVING

Character lives
in the particulars.

A tree within the plan

The official Villa 15 page describes a home wrapping around a large tree in its hallway. Nature shapes the space rather than simply providing a view.

Family spaces beyond bedrooms

Villa 15 includes a study, a children’s den and a nanny’s room. It illustrates how Soneva accommodates different family routines within one large villa.

03 / THE IDEA BECOMES A HOME

Soneva Fushi Villa Ownership

Soneva’s documented design ethos puts the existing landscape and responsibly sourced natural materials at the centre of the home. This is historical design context, not a current fit-out specification for every villa offered for ownership.

Design around a tree — historical example
The 2014–15 report describes Villa 15 at Soneva Fushi as built around one of the island’s largest banyan trees.
Handwoven textiles — brand context
Eva identifies handwoven fabrics from Barefoot in Sri Lanka in the 2014–15 report; application to a specific current ownership villa is not verified.

Step inside the home
Character in the details

Living at the island’s pace.

Soneva’s architectural idea begins with direct contact with nature.

The 2024 Villa Ownership documents present the private homes of Fushi and Jani as a distinct residential collection. Plans, outdoor spaces and island amenities let a home be understood through everyday rituals: mornings on the terrace, water, shade and a family table.

Founders Sonu and Eva Shivdasani established the brand’s original direction: simplicity, natural materials and attention to place. Understanding a home requires returning to that specific villa and its documents: a hotel photograph alone does not define the property being offered.

The source is an archived 2024 brochure. Current ownership terms and availability of a specific villa require separate confirmation. Founders are identified in their historical role.

Soneva Fushi Villa Ownership

At Soneva Fushi, beach villas sit within tropical greenery, with gardens and generous outdoor living areas shaping the island experience. The published Villa 15 example makes that relationship particularly tangible: its plan curves around a jungle tree and gives family life a study, children’s den and poolside gathering spaces. Other large villa types offer different bedroom arrangements and orientations. Beyond the residence, glassmaking, recycled-material workshops and the observatory give the resort its distinctive character. These published accommodation examples illustrate the design; they do not establish which homes are currently offered for ownership.

Soneva Jani Villa Ownership

Soneva Jani’s published villa collection explores two different relationships with the lagoon: living over the water and living beside the beach. The Water Reserve example opens its bedroom to the sky through a retractable roof, while its deck brings together a freshwater pool, lounging nets and direct lagoon access. Island villas place larger family arrangements within gardens by the sand. The resort adds play at The Den and outdoor films at Cinema Paradiso. These design examples describe the accommodation collection, without implying that each is currently available to purchase.
